Chichester Yacht Club Snowflake Series - Day 10

by David Brecknell 2 Mar 2009 14:31 GMT 1 March 2009

Last Sunday, March 1st, the last two races in this Winter’s Snowflake Series at Chichester Yacht Club were sailed with good entries and satisfactory conditions, with a moderate westerly, which required a slightly intricate course with two beats, two runs, and a long reach, and fairly warm conditions.

The three Handicap fleets were joined on the water by a group of Fevas who had been training on Saturday, and were being coached in their race, which started after the Slow Handicap.

In the Fast Fleet , with twenty-one entries, first place in race 1 was taken by Ross Jackson and Liam Dempsey in their Merlin Still not Over, and by John Gorringe and Pete Horn in their Merlin, Easy Rider, in race 2. The racing was as competitive as ever – so much so that one Merlin, trying to get the best possible start, misjudged things slightly, and became entangled with the rig on the Committee Boat! Brain Earl and John Mortimer, in their Javelin, led on the water in Race 19, but in Race 19 the International Fourteen of Andy Fitzgerald and his crew led, as the water had become deep enough for them not to get stuck at the lee mark with their deep dagger board, as happened in Race 18, and held them back very considerably.

In the Medium Handicap their were some newcomers at the head of the twenty-six strong fleet in Race 18: Lee Sydenham won in his Solo, with David Sayce second, and Colin Smith third in his Laser, with Derek Jackman, Roger Millett and the Colbournes fourth, fifth and sixth. In Race 19, with a bit more wind and less tide, Ed Thorburn came through to win in his Finn, with Smith second and the Colbournes third, and the three Solos coming next.

In the Slow Handicap two Mirrors and a Topper were first, second and third. The Mirrors were sailed by the brothers Lovesey, crewed by Milly Pugh and Kim May, while third place went to Ben Clark.

Once the results had been worked out, the overall places were announced at the Prizegiving. Altogether the Series had attracted no fewer than 138 entries, although not all of these qualified by completing ten races. In the Fast Fleet William Warren and Chris Robinson had a long lead – so long that they had not needed to sail on the last two days of racing. Three other Merlins took the next places, and then CYC members Brian Earl and John Mortimer in the Javelin and Nick and Roger Elliman in an RS400 followed. In the Medium Handicap local sailors did rather better. First overall were Nick and Biddy Colbourne in their GP14, and Derek Jackman, Ian Lissamore and Mark Harper were fourth, fifth and sixth. David Sayce was second in his Solo, and Ian Brooks third in his Laser. In the Slow Handicap first place went to Anthony Parke in his Optimist, Ben Clark was second, and Andrew and Sarah Martin third in their Miracle, Sam Burrows and Olly Miller fourth and Abbie Page fifth.
