Thankfully the forecast was right and the rain held off for most of the day, leaving the fleet dry to do battle with the fresh offshore breeze. This unusual direction forced a running start which lead to much fun and games at the first mark despite the entry of nineteen boats being split into two fleets for that very reason.

In the first seeding heat John Tushingham lead the fleet home followed by Eastbourne's Keith Tyson who was making a welcome return to the class. The second seeding heat threw up a bit of a victory for the home skippers, Graham Allen held his nerve to win a hard fought battle with John Arundell. Race two was thrown wide open on the last run when the leaders were flattened by a strong gust and struggled to make the leeward buoy without repeated nose-diving, allowing the second bunch of boats to wipe out their advantage and set up a new race for the finish.

The wind didn't let up for the final leg but John Tushingham managed to get through and record a second win on the trot and at the risk of being repetitive, went on to win all eight races on the day. The final lap carnage enabled Nick Milton and Peter Robinson to record their best results of the day in second and third.

Was it time to change down rigs? Depended on whether you wanted to survive the gusts or power through the lighter bits, safer to drop down, but several hardy types took the risk and stayed with B rig. For a few races the smaller rigs seemed to have the edge but as the wind slowly eased timing your change back up was crucial. In race three John Arundell and Adrian Tomlinson had the first of many close tussles, this time John got the better of Adrian to finish second. The local boys stepped up again in race four with Graham Allen taking second to maintain his fine early form, clubmate Paddy Chambers crossing close behind in third.

The Arundell/Tomlinson battle then got into full swing for the next three races, with the advantage going to Adrian in races five and seven. John got back to his more usual form in the last race and pushed John Tushingham hard all the way and forced some very close covering up the final beat.

Despite the tricky conditions, the day provided close, exciting racing and a real test of distance judgement. 2 Islands once again laid on a great event in their usual friendly manner. Round six of the TT series is back to one of our favourite venues, Poole, sure to be a big turnout on Sunday 2nd September.

With a race within a race for the Johnson family The wind was blowing from the clubhouse direction for the ten RC Laser entries. It looked to be a stock 'B' rig all-dayer, but with the light patch at the entry point, a bit of extra sail cloth helps you get through the lulls. Posted on 6 Oct 2024
