Erith Yacht Club Open Weekend

by Sarah Mees 15 Sep 2003 11:29 BST 13th and 14th September 2003

Erith Yacht Club's 103rd Open Weekend had visitors from as far afield as New Zealand. Comeptitors, including a good percentage of youngsters enjoyed sunshine, frustrating gaps in the wind, coupled with a healthy tide. Saturday's course, set by Mr B Elmes, was a challenge with some spectacular drifting. Despite a late start Richard Banner, Solo 2141, used local knowledge to win. Those forced to retire early included young entrant Bethany (8) sailing with Darren Leigh in Hamble Star 113. The Wayfarers (Stubbers Young Mariners) vied healthily for position throughout the race. Cruisers took a similar course in front of the club ship Folgefonn.

Sunday's conditions were similar and Osprey 1146 (Ron Cook and family) took the lead followed closely by Snipe 26090 (Graham Campbell, George and Sarah Mees(7)). Topaz Erith team of Richard Sheridan (13) and Robert Harle staid the course for a good place. The Wayfarer Stubbers team fought closely to the end passing the Osprey who unfortunately settled in the windless tide trap.

The cruisers had a close start which widened out to those that knew the river. Richard Banner and Alan Cooper in Marlin took a chance and came inshore. The main fight was between Nokomis of Kent (Brian Elliston and Sandi Charstone) and Fairtrade (Duncan Thomson and crew) fighting for the finish line, the latter taking the gun at the last second. Nicole (Paul Gladden, Dudley Davies and Emily Harper) were always a threat but none had enough time over Marlin. The Commodore handed out the prizes, followed by the usual thanks to the visitors, race, rescue and food crews.
