Laser 4.7 Worlds at Cesme, Turkey - Day 3
by Jeffrey Martin 16 Jul 2003 08:06 BST
On the third day of the Laser 4.7 World Championship the 98 strong fleet enjoyed some more excellent sailing under sunny skies. The wind repeated it pattern of the previous day although a little lighter. Building from a calm in the morning there was ten knots across the course for the start of the first race which then dropped to five knots before building again to 10 knots. The lighter conditionsin the first race of the day saw 4 of the top ten from the previous day score their worst results whilst some of the lighter sailors came to the front. These included several of the under fifteen sailors including Luka Domijan SLO and Alexandros Kiourtzis GRE who finished first and second in their fleet.
However there were no such problems for the overnight leader, Onur Derebasi from Turkey who consolidated his lead with two first places in the light wind first race and the stronger wind second race of the day. Behind him Bojan IVE from Croatia swaps places with Ates Cinar from Turkey. Although scoring the same points in their two races Ive overtakes Cinar after the first discard comes into effect. These 3 together with a now recovered Philip White GBR were the only four sailors to score top five results in both races.
In the female fleet Ayda Unver TUR showed a clear dislike of the lighter winds scoring her worst result of the series whilst her nearest rival, Anita Di Asio ITA had her best day of the championship so far.
Stronger winds are forecast for the last day of qualifications before the fleet is split into gold and silver groups for the last two days of racing.
