The 2004 UK 18 foot Skiff National Championsip concluded today (Sunday) with the three final races of the nine race series.
The first race of the day, Race 7 of the series, took place under grey skies with a breeze of 8 to 10 knots. Base 1, sailed by Rob Dulson, Paul Constable and Drum Sydenham was the early leader, but a problem with their spinnaker halyard forced them to retire. Their attempts at on the water repairs seemed to have done the trick, but they had further trouble in both the succeeding races, and found when they came ashore that the culprit was a halyard block of a type which had been used successfully before and was replaced routinely on the first day of the regatta.
Andy Richards, Andrew Fairley and Dave Richards on Radii came home first, with series leaders Grant Rollerson, Mark Tait and Lachlan Torrance on Hermes second, and Peter Barton, Martin Borrett and Richard Stenhouse third on Henri Lloyd.
Race 8 was won by the Hermes team, giving them overall victory in the series with a race to spare. Henri Lloyd finished second, with Radii in third place.
Radii won Race 9, which took place in a better breeze of 12 to 15 knots, with Base 1 second and Henri Lloyd third. Hermes deservedly took the series, with Radii second and Base 1 third.
The Scottish Sailing Institute and the staff of Sport Scotland's superb National Centre at Cumbrae had combined to organise an excellent event, which, together with the efforts of the race management team, was much appreciated by the competitors.
