Northern Bell GP 14 Open Meeting at West Kirby Sailing Club

by Richard Orrell 7 Sep 2001 08:42 BST

Sept 1st/2nd

Something of a first for West Kirby. It was decided to have a joint Open Meeting for GP 14s, Larks, Lasers and Fireflies. Steve Dransfield was the Principal Race Officer, which involved him having to find three start boats + a race officer for each of them, + ten Ribs to cover for rescue duties.

27 GP 14s turned out for this Northern Bell event, which consisted of two races on the tide on the Saturday morning with a force 1-2 wind, followed by one race on the Marine Lake with a force 4-5.

Sundays racing involved another two races on the tide, again with a force 4-5. One advantage of the combined meeting was the fact that it enabled the Club to have a seriously good social in the evening with a live group and 250 sailors enjoying themselves. Mike Senior and Chris Aubrey were the team on-the-pace for the weekend, and they notched up five first places out of five starts(4 to count). 2nd place went to local sailor Neil Platt with four 2nd places.

Overall the weekend was a great success, and the fact that events ran so smoothly was a tribute to the team work that is involved with such a venture.
