RS K6 Fat Face Racing Circuit at Queen Mary Sailing Club

by RS Class Association 20 Apr 2005 16:54 BST 16-17 April 2005

The first round of the Fat Face RS K6 series fielded a 17 boat fleet. The weather forecast was for light breezes with big wind shifts, and the Race officer pulled-off quite an achievement to get the 3 races in on the Saturday.

Race 1 started with the fleet becalmed on the line. The Wadhams, helped by Emma Carveth, found wind first and shot off with Georgie and Fraser in hot pursuit playing hop-scotch with the patches of breeze. It looked like game-over until new boys David Hitchcock and Ian Nicholson decided to completely re-write the form book, taking not only race one, but races two and three also. It was snakes and ladders like racing with huge shifts and gapping holes… but funny how the same guys found the ladders each time.

Sunday promised a more consistent breeze and delivered this with sunshine. The conditions and nip and tuck racing were clearly to Hitchcock’s and Nicholson’s liking and, with 3 more bullets, they achieved the first clean sweep in the fleet for quite a while. Homework for Martin Wadhams and crew ! Alex and Becca Willard spent Sunday fighting it out with Jonathon Calascione and Pearce for the 4th overall, and succeeded. Neil Austen raised a few eyebrows with a very quick 3rd in the fifth race, leaving the fleet wondering whether this had anything to do with the very vocal ‘encouragement’ he seemed to be getting from his crew ?!

Special mention goes to Lucy Miller who helmed a K6 for the first time during races 4 and 5, inspired by ‘wintering’ on the South African coast for 3 months.

Overall Results:

1st 155 – Dave Hitchcock, Ian Nicholson – Hayling Island
2nd 102 (Fat Face) - Martin & Amanda Wadhams, Emma Carveth – Lymington Town
3rd 132 (Scooby Doo Too) – Bill Masterman, Dan – Hayling Island
4th 127 – Alex and Becca Willard – Royal Corinthian
5th 156 (Take Two) – Jonathan Calscione, Pyers Tucker – Queen Mary
6th 108 (Jo-Jo) – Neil Austin, Justin Berry - Plymouth
