Seven radio-controlled landyachts came out for an impromptu evening of racing at West Quay Retail Park in Southampton. A brisk North-westerly was blowing across the carpark with gusts catching the unwary at inopportune moments.

There were two new landyachts out for their first spin; Team New Zealand's weather guru Ray Davies and Cassie Richardson sailing Thunderbird 6.

The format of racing for the radio controlled landyacht fleet is a 20 second audible countdown and short two lap windward-leeward races. Speeds of up to 30 miles an hour can be achieved by these craft so racing is fast and furious.

The first race saw Matt Curthoys helming ‘YachtsandYachting.com’ get away to a narrow victory ahead of Kevin George helming ‘North Sails’. Third went to Emily Moorman helming ‘The Pink Lady’.

The rest of the evening’s racing was dominated by illbruck navigator Ian Moore in ‘1dl.co.uk’ with four straight firsts. The rest of the fleet was up and down in the results due to the tight racing.

Ian Moore came out on top in the results with Kevin George second and Tim Burnell driving Ben Vines’ ‘GBR-999’ third.

If you want to try 1DL racing for yourself then contact Mark Jardine or Ian Moore. 1DL landyachts will soon be exclusively available to buy through the YachtsandYachting.com Shop and regular racing will be held throughout the season. All you need is a car-park or a good smooth flat surface to have the most fun possible sailing without water!
