The change of format this year produced varied and exciting sailing for a small fleet despite varied and unpredictable weather.
On Saturday two Olympic style triangle and sausage courses were sailed in a F5-6 in Start Bay. Mike Mackie’s X-332 won both in the small IRC class from Peter Johnson’s X-302, while Christopher Parker in his First 40.1 won both PY races. Sunday’s cloudless conditions were promising with a good wind which died at the first mark. The X-332 again won with David MacDonald’s SJ320 Seajade second. Only one boat finished the PY race. Excellent Race Officering, shifting the start further offshore, a shortened course and the onset of a sea breeze pleased everyone as two more races were completed in a F3-4 in time for a late lunch.
Meanwhile the local J-80 fleet completed seven of their scheduled eight windward-leeward races in a well fought series. Rennie Miller with five wins took first place from Robin Inkster who narrowly beat Roger Gerrish, having tied on points.
The new format should prove attractive for Torbay and Plymouth crews for future years.
