NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY APPROVES NEW SAILING FACILITIES

The Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority’s Planning Committee, meeting yesterday (Tuesday) in Arncliffe, has approved an application for a new sailing centre at Grimwith Reservoir, above Hebden.

The sailing centre, located in a former quarry on the southern shore of the reservoir, will include the development of a clubhouse, landing ramps, pontoons, as well as additional car and boat parking space and facilities for sailors with disabilities.

Approval for the application follows a number of meetings between the applicants and Authority’s planning officers to ensure the reservoir’s value as an important breeding site for the Ringed Plover remains protected during the breeding season.

Peter Watson, head of planning at the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, said: "We are delighted to give the go-ahead for this new range of facilities for residents and visitors alike, who wish to enjoy their sport at this outstanding site in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

"Grimwith Sailing Club has worked closely with this Authority and English Nature to bring forward an application that not only meets the needs of today’s sportsmen and women who wish to sail on Grimwith Reservoir, but also ensures the wildlife of the area is protected."

Grimwith Sailing Club, is a not for profit sailing and water sports club which provides training and sailing recreational facilities for over 150 members. There are two National Champions amongst the current membership.
