RYA Yorks & Humberside Masters at Grimwith Sailing Club

by Jonathan Lister 24 Sep 2003 11:11 BST 20 September 2003

A forecast of 5mph winds wasn't the best omen for the day, but 21 competitors from 10 clubs braved the light winds for a great day of racing. This annual event is one of those where the RYA gives something back to members with lunch included and prizes galore - everyone agreed it was a great day.

Either the light winds favoured the RS200 or else the hot helms happened to be sailing RS200s. Race 1 was led from the start by Keith Escritt and Anne Saul, with the top 6 places all RS200s. The usual domination by Grimwith Vortexes had been broken at last!

Colin Newman's International Moth made all the running in race 2 but he slowed on the last lap of a long race letting the top RS200s win on handicap. Tony Wetherell had been leading the closely packed bunch of RS200s until the third lap when Keith Escritt crucially banged the left side of the beat to take the lead and the series.

Tony and Jack Wetherell came back with a vengeance for race 3, leading off the line and never looking in danger of being caught. Martin / Barbara Smith and Andrew / Eve Hartley had also decided that the slightly stronger breeze suited them and they took second and third after a great battle, with Keith Escritt snapping at their heels all the way round.

Keith and Anne won overall, Andrew and Eve Hartley took the Ton Up Trophy and Stan & Dawn Speer the Grand Masters Trophy. Everyone will be back again next year - why not come and join us?
