22nd December 2002
Forty three boats with competitors from as far afield as Sunderland Yacht Club contested this years race ranging in speed from a 49er to a gig from the local sea scouts. The wind increased through the morning to give a good sailing breeze (although a bit gusty) for the 13:00 race. The faster boats took an early lead only to come to grief on the second and third downwind legs. L Walker (rs400) was round the first lap fastest closely followed by M Ager (dart 16). The second lap was similar to the first with lots of thrills and spills . The race was shortened to two laps due to the big difference in boat speed and the safety implications of having the slower boats out for to long.
