NE NSSA Traveller Series Final at Newbiggin Sailing Club

by Mandy Hindle 25 Sep 2002 14:53 BST

21st September 2002

The final event of the Northeast NSSA Youth Traveller's event for under 19's, took place on Saturday 21st September, with 23 boats taking part from all around the Northeast. The fleet was dominated with the presence of Toppers from South Shields SC, Sunderland YC and the host club Newbiggin SC.

All three races were held throughout the day in very light winds, with one race before lunch and two back to back after lunch.

Paul Davis, Sunderland YC, dominated all three races of the day, in his Laser, with an impressive three 1st Places to count. Not far behind sailing his Laser from Derwent Reservoir SC was Gary Young, who managed two 2nd Places and a 4th. Other top five position were fought for eagerly by Chris Harland, sailing his Topper from South Shields SC. But keeping them all at bay, was Eve English sailing her Topper from South Shields SC. She scored an impressive two 2nd places, and a 3rd, taking her equal on points by the end of the days racing, with Gary Young in his Laser. However Gary just managed to pip 2nd Place overall by the results in the last race, to be counted for 2nd and 3rd place.

At the back end of the fleet the Newbiggin Youth Squad, fresh from racing last weekend at Kielder Water SC, fought it out between themselves for final a placings. First Newbiggin Boat went to Matthew Chambers sailing in the Club’s Topper, but followed closely by Bruce Carnaby and Sarah Birch sailing the Club’s 420. They did very well in the day’s racing as it was there first Open Meeting racing together.

A big thanks goes to everyone who made the weekend possible, the Galley Staff, for an excellent lunch, the Race Officer and assistants, all Safety boat crews and Shore Crew. The event would not have been possible without all the help of each person who participated, including the parents for travelling to the events.
