Dinghy Open Meeting at West Kirby Sailing Club

by Paul Jenkins 2 Sep 2001 18:19 BST

58 boats arrived for a unique event at West Kirby Sailing Club in its cenenary year. Four seperate classes raced on the River Dee and on the marine lake.

Racing took place on three seperate courses, with the Larks and Lasers sailing together. There was very little wind for the first two races. There was a very early start which some visitors found difficult to be ready for.

In the GP14 class the race honours went to Mike Senior and Chris Aubrey of Bolton Sailing Club, with Neil Platt and Julia Cornah following. The GP's went off first when racing moved to the marine lake in the afternoon after the wind had filled back in. Again Mike Senior and Chris Aubrey won that race. Second place Neil Platt capsized and retired.

The Firefly fleet kept up the standard shown at the recent National Championships in Weymouth with all the boats closely packed together round the course. Barney Smith and Nina Hartley won the first race with Roger Morris winning the second. The lake race in the afternoon was won by Chris Kameen and Lis Neeve.

This year also so the return of the Lark fleet to West Kirby, absent for a number of seasons. Visitors were from Ranelagh, Barnt Green, Leeds, Shustoke and West Riding. The first race was won by Dougal & Nigel Scott of Ranelagh SC and the second by Richard and Jenny Bennett(who failed to start the first race as they were late!!!). When racing started on the lake, Dougal & Nigel Scott took the honours.

The laser fleet has also been absent from WKSC for a number of seasons. West Kirby member ROb Graham won the first race , but didn't finish in the second and didn't start any more. Neil Walker won the second and Dave Potter the third.

The evening entertainment was provided by The Reverb Brothers who played live music well into the night, the famous West Kirby hospitality showing through, the evening made even noisier by the 5-1 win to England against Germany earlier in the day.
