Folkboat Royal Lymington Yacht Club Spring Series - Race 4&5
by Sarah Reed 23 Apr 2001 16:58 BST
Sunday 22nd April was the first Sunday of back to back races. The Royal Lymington race committee set an excellent Olympic style course for the Folkboat fleet.
The wind was a steady force four, which increased slightly for the second race gusting to force five.
The first race start favoured the leeward end and saw Rio (Mike Shepherd) get away cleanly from the rest of the fleet. The first mark saw Aquavit (Simon Osgood & Tom Howard), Box Clever (John Bence) and Rio arrive all together, with Aquavit getting ahead through a quicker spinnaker hoist and set.
As they reached the downwind turn mark Aquavit had opened up a reasonable lead over the two closest competitors Box Clever and Rio, this lead was maintained until the finish.
Race two saw the fleet getaway cleanly in an increasing South Westerly wind. A familiar sight saw Aquavit first to the first mark, followed by Rio, then Box Clever.
Aquavit extended her lead, leaving Rio to battle out second with Box Clever, with Box Clever eventually pipping Rio by four seconds on the line.
