Since its introduction to British waters, the Nordic Folkboat has become a staple of Solent sailing. With the Folkboat Association nurturing this tradition, the fleet continues to grow, offering a packed calendar of racing and a thriving community. The 2025 season promises to be an unforgettable year on the water.
The season kicks off with the Folkboat Nationals, scheduled for 14th-15th June at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club. Featuring five races over two days, this regatta is the first major event that brings the fleet together for competitive sailing and an early season marker.
Next regatta on the calendar is the legendary Folkboat Week, held from 16th-22nd August and hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club. Marking its 60th anniversary in 2025, this prestigious event blends exhilarating racing with a lively social scene, making it a must-attend for Folkboat sailors. With divisions catering to both racing and cruising enthusiasts, Folkboat Week embodies the spirit of the class—tradition, skill, and sportsmanship.
The third key regatta is the Battle of Britain Regatta, set for 12th-14th September at the Royal Air Force Yacht Club in Hamble. Combined with a vibrant festival atmosphere, this event provides an exciting challenge both on the water and ashore.
Beyond its more dedicated regattas, the Folkboat fleet also enjoys exclusive starts in some of the Solent's most prestigious competitions. The class has its own start at the Taittinger Regatta, held on 5th-6th July, as well as a class in the iconic Round the Island Race, allowing Folkboat sailors to race alongside a diverse fleet.
Away from the larger events, Folkboats race every week from April to October on Saturdays and Wednesdays, providing sailors plenty of opportunities to practice, refine their skills, and enjoy the waters of the Solent.
With low running costs for a keelboat class and the ability to sail effectively with only two or three crew members, Folkboats present an excellent balance of competition, tradition, and accessibility.
