Wayfarer Inlands & Junior Champs at Bewl Valley Sailing Club

by Geoff Hilton 22 Apr 2001 20:05 BST

The Wayfarer Inlands and Junior Championships were held at Bewl Valley Sailing Club in Kent, over the weekend of 21st/22nd April.

Three races were held on Saturday, in a north easterly, which varied in strength between force three and nothing, and which frequently swung through ninety degrees, making life very difficult for race committeee and competitiors alike.

Sailmaker Mike McNamara and Simon Townsend in Cordon Rouge, from Norfolk Broads SC, proved the masters of the conditions, and scored two firsts and fourth, closely chased by boatbuilder Ian Porter and Kevan Gibb, with two seconds and a ninth.

On the Sunday, two races were sailed, this time in a more reliable southerly, blowing three, gusting four. With a much more constant wind direction, the race officer was able to lay a figure of eight course which provided a good beat and some testing gybes and reaches.

These conditions seemed to be more to the liking of Ian Porter, back in his wooden boat, Scavenger, after a season sailing a GRP boat last season. He scored two straight firsts, and with Mike McNamara only managing two thirds, this was enought to give the Hayling Island pair the Inlands Championship for 2001.

The Dick Notley Trophy and Junior championship went to Jennifer Whiting, sailing with her father Trevor, from Norfolk Broads YC.
