Class 5 and Mini Land Yacht European Championships 2026 at Terschelling, Netherlands - Day 2

by Nick Heather 7 Nov 08:26 GMT 4-7 November 2026

Day two dawned even colder on Terschelling, but the competitors were once again rewarded with excellent wind and beach conditions. With the tide running around an hour later than the previous day, the fleet assembled on the beach at 09:30, ready for another full programme of racing.

The easterly wind continued to blow, although its slightly offshore direction prompted the race team to move the course further east, away from some of the larger dunes. This also provided an opportunity to rethink the course layout following the opening day's racing.

The previous sausage course, which had used separation flags to define the upwind and downwind legs, was replaced with a rectangular course. This allowed the yachts to make much better use of the full width of the beach on both up and downwind, creating a more open racing area and a different set of tactical challenges.

The race briefing covered the revised course in detail, including the various obstacles and patches of softer sand that pilots would need to negotiate.

The new location provided a larger start box, although this did not necessarily make the starts any easier. The fleet tended to favour the far right of the line, with pilots bunching together and sometimes struggling to get cleanly away. A few more opportunistic pilots spotted the advantage of starting further to the left. This gave them room to build speed before reaching the seaward boundary, allowing them to tack back across the fleet with both momentum and space on their side.

Once away from the start, the racing was fast and tactical. Pilots weaved their way through the fleet, picking their lines around obstacles and the occasional patch of soft sand. Getting through these sections cleanly brought its own reward, although there were a few close calls and a couple of coming-togethers. Fortunately, there were no injuries and damage was limited to a few scuffs on the yachts.

With four races of 15 minutes followed by a final 20-minute race, the pilots covered close to 60 km over the day. The forecast had suggested winds of 14-22 mph, easing later in the afternoon, but the breeze remained towards the upper end of the range, providing another excellent day's racing.

The familiar names from the French team once again dominated the podium. Amaury Martin continued his remarkable run, following up his five race wins on Day One with another clean sweep of five wins on Day Two.

However, the biggest cheer of the afternoon came at the prize-giving, when Fynn Beughot secured a second place in the final race, earning himself a well-deserved place on the podium and a particularly enthusiastic reception from the crowd.

With two days of championship racing completed, the forecast for tomorrow suggests a change in conditions. Temperatures are expected to fall further, with a wind chill bringing the perceived temperature down to around 4°C. Winds are forecast to ease to 8-12 mph, potentially bringing a rather different set of challenges for the remaining racing.
