Wild Haggis Flies in Stiff Breeze to Conclude the Series

The Poole Yacht Racing Association (PYRA) wrapped up its inaugural Poole Bay Summer Series on Sunday, 27 September 2026, with Race 5. A competitive fleet of 13 yachts braved a challenging southerly breeze averaging 20 knots, with gusts peaking over 26 knots.

The PRO, Andrew Pearce, set a 9-mark course, providing a tour of Poole Bay. It tested the crews across multiple points of sail, including four beats, two tight reaches, and a fast spinnaker reach towards Bournemouth Pier.

Class Highlights

Class 0: The Farr 30 Wild Haggis dominated the class from the start, leading the fleet around the course to take line honours and the corrected-time class win. Rumour has it they touched 18 knots down the spinnaker reach!

Class 1: Joy (JPK 1010) rounded the first windward mark at the head of the class and steadily extending their lead to win Race 5. However, a consistent performance across the summer secured Red Fox the Class 1 series win.

Class 2: Haven KJ Enigma took first place, giving the faster classes a run for their money and in the process, securing the series win.

Class 3: The Contessa 32, Trican, took first place. However QT, the smallest boat entered at 25 foot long, won the Class 3 series, counting three 1st places and a 2nd.

Race 5 Results:

Class 0: 1st Wild Haggis (Farr 30), 2nd Vent de Globe (Figuro 2), 3rd Addiction (First 40.7)

Class 1: 1st Joy (JPK1010), 2nd Red Fox (A31), 3rd Energy (Elan 333)

Class 2: 1st Haven KJ Enigma (MG 346), 2nd Le Adventure (Pogo 8.5)

Class 3: 1st Trican (Contessa 32), 2nd QT (Ecume de Mere)

The prize-giving was held at Parkstone Yacht Club, with drinks and prizes kindly provided by the day's sponsor, Suttle Stone Quarries. Other sponsors across the series were: Ward Goodman, Stoneways Marine, Sandbanks Brewery and Savills.

Looking Forward to 2027

Designed to make the most of the fantastic racing venue of Poole Bay, this new PYRA series enjoyed a successful debut season, with 30 yachts taking part over the summer. Following this year's success, PYRA has confirmed the series will return for 2027, expanded from 5 to 6 race Sundays across the summer.

Next Up: Autumn Yacht Series

Local racing shifts focus next Sunday to the Parkstone Yacht Club's Autumn Yacht Series, with racing again taking place in Poole Bay. This is an open event, and PYRA competitors and yachts from other clubs are actively encouraged to join the fun!.
