The windy conditions, with patches of sunny weather, saw the day boats visit up the river, while the big boats had the rest of the river to play with, on the 6th day of Burnham Week. The day proved to be decisive for the overall Midweek Series results, as with the racing on day 7 being cancelled, moments before the writing of this report.
With the day boats going up river, classes 1&2, 5 and 6 play field was at the confluence of the rivers Crouch and Roach.
The class 1&2 race and the overall Midweek Series was won by Tabitha & Nicholas Plank' Slingshot, while Dan Wastnage and Doug Duce's Flashheart took the day and overall win in class 5, followed by Eclipse, helmed by Daryl Mylroie, taking the second.
Ian and Michèle Langston's Fifi's day win was not enough to overtake Phillip Harbott's Mantra - third on the day and Mark Wade's Avalanche Too - second on the day, with the final standings being Mantra, Avalanche Too and Fifi.
From Burnham Sailing Club, the first to start were the Royal Corinthian One Designs, with a short leg around Fairway 13 and back to West Quay, before heading up the river.
The race was quite animated, yet, due to a sound tactical decision, Justin Waples' Cormorant emerged as the winner, followed by Clive and Graeme Page's Corpo Santo and Martin Makey's Corinna, with the overall win going to Cormorant.
Next were the Squibs, with the mark rounding around Fairway 13 adding some challenges to a few of the boats.
Steve Hall's Pinky Promise emerged as early leader and despite having to be reminded where Cliff was, only gave way to the eventual race winners, Micky Wright and Alex Porteous - Spoof and finished second, after a fierce race on the last leg to the finish, against Ray Apthorp and Ian Simons' Chequemate.
After a spectacular close encounter with the mud on the north shore during the leg between Fairway 13 and West Quay, it looked like the race was over for Chequemate, however Ray and Ian fought their way back to a third place finish and are winners of the Midweek Series, followed in the overall table by Micky and Alex on Spoof, with Malcolm Hutchings' Lady P in third.
The next to start, albeit on a slightly shortened course, were the Royal Burnham One Designs and Stephen Herring's Red Jacket comfortably won the day and the overall series, followed by James Dallimore's Whimbrel - third on the day and Simon Hollington's Beryl - second on the day, third overall.
With the racing cancelled for the 7th day of the regatta, all eyes are on the forecast for Trophy Day, Saturday, 5th of September.
