DF95 Summer Series at East Kent Radio Sailing Club - Week 5

by Peter Jackson 21 Aug 17:43 BST 20 August 2026
DF95 Summer Series at Barton's Point week 5 - (L-R) Adrian Tomlinson, Paul Woodward, Max hunt, Ed Coxon, Dave Adams (low), David Tomlinson, Peter Jackson, Alan Hounsell, Spencer Pope, Colin Honour, Rob Owens, Andrew Nicholls © Mike Brand

14 races were sailed with 13 boats competing on a good course set by Dave Tomlinson. But unlucky for some the wind direction made top marks distant, proving tricky. All but one used A rigs under a blue, white and dark grey sky, low cumulous clouds bringing shifts and gusts.

Rob Owens led race 1 early before doing his thing at the windward marks, so Dave Adams marked his return by going straight to the front after a break, taking race 1 from in form Peter Jackson and Adrian Tomlinson. Dave then had 3 DNCs with an electronics issue. Peter and Adrian tangled in race 2 and the younger Tomlinson, Dave, won from Colin Honour and Mike Brand. Then the first 2 switched, Mike winning from Dave, with Rob Owens 3rd.

The 4th different race winner was then Adrian, after two discards, from Colin and brother David. The 5th winner was Peter, from Alan Hounsell and Adrian, with Peter also going on to win race 6 to make it two in a row, this time from the returning Dave Adams and Colin Honour. Colin then led all the way round in race 7 becoming the 6th different winner, from Dave and Adrian. Having messed up the top mark 3 times Rob gave up lunch to practice clean roundings, easier with no other boats!

Normal order was restored in race 8 as Dave won from Peter and Adrian But then the forecast wind increase arrived and Spencer Pope, who had been plugging round in mid fleet with the only B rig, led from start to finish in race 9 to become the 7th different winner. Paul Woodward chased Dave Adams in for the podium spots. Fresh from a break and near win at Cowes week steering 'Stiletto' this was Paul's best place of the day. In the next race nose dives were performed by Peter, to lose the lead to Adrian, and over half of the rest of the fleet, before the wind eased back.

At this point Peter was just ahead of Adrian for the event, with Colin Honour just ahead of Mike Brand and David Tomlinson for 3rd spot. David then fell away, finishing 5,3,5,5,6, Dave Adams put in a 2,1,2 but all too late, and Mike's 4,3,7,1 trumped Colin's 5,2,4,7 to draw level on points with Colin, taking 3rd place on countback 10 points back from 2nd. Chairman Alan Hounsell and Rob Owens scored a 3rd each but both still behind Dave Adams in 6th behind Dave T. Paul Woodward and Rob Owens sat out the last few races with boat & sail failures. Max Hunt and Andrew Nicholls scored a best 5th place each before also retiring hurt.

At the front, Adrian switched into overdrive for the last five races with a devastating 1,1,4,1,2 sequence. Peter had flattened his sails but hadn't changed back as the wind eased and couldn't hold off Adrian who took the event by four clear points for his first win in the series.
