Top 10 Teams Selected for the Medal Series
Another three races were completed in the Gold Fleet and two in the Silver Fleet, with the top 10 teams qualifying for the Medal Series of the World Championship in Enoshima, Japan. Tomorrow, the Final Stage of the racing will begin.
Leading the fleet and going into the Medal Series in first place are Martin Wrigley and Bettine Harris from Great Britain. The British duo started the day with a race victory, while they finished the next two races around 10th place. Just behind them are the Spanish team of Jordi Xammar and Marta Cardona.
"It has been quite a challenging day in terms of the weather, tactics and strategy, but we did a good job and had three pretty good races. Obviously, our focus is already on tomorrow. We're not particularly close on points, but we have two races ahead of us, unlike before when we only had one, so it's important to stay focused and try to give it everything tomorrow," said Jordi.
In third place overall are the Japanese sailors Tetsuya Isozaki and Yurie Seki. They had a strong race today, but unfortunately their start was over the line, and they were classified as BFD.
Another team enjoying a strong week of sailing is Germany's Theresa Loffler and Christopher Hoerr, who are currently in fourth place.
“It was very difficult, very unpredictable. We struggled a bit with the starts in most of the races, except for the last one, where we had a really good start. Then racing was a bit easier, and we managed to be in the front group already at the windward mark. It's always easier when you're already in front. Maybe we should start better in the future,” said Theresa.
Christopher added:
“I think we have to see what kind of wind it is for tomorrow. I didn't have a look at the results myself yet, so I don't know how close the points are. I think that will be important for tomorrow's racing.”
“I think I'm generally very positive-minded, trying to get the best out of it, while not being under big pressure.”
Just behind the German team are Greek sailors Afrodite Zegeres-De Kleine and George Kavvas. Zegeres-de Kleine knows these waters very well, having finished tenth at the Tokyo Olympic Games. She is now building a new partnership with Kavvas.
“Like our initial goal, it's our first regatta together. We're sailing together for two months, and Jorgos didn't sail for 14 years. For me, I had a really long way back. I had four knee surgeries and a lot of trouble doing this. A lot of sacrifice to be here. For us, we just enjoy the ride,” said Afrodite.
“I'm extremely competitive. I'm a bit grumpy after the third race because we could easily be a few boats ahead. But in general, we learned in every race. The first day, we had some good moments and some mistakes. The second day, the same. By evaluating, I think during the whole week we became a better team together,” she added.
