470 World Championship 2026 in Enoshima - Day 1

The first day of the 470 World Championships in Enoshima did not go quite as planned. After several days of fantastic sailing conditions before the first day of World Championships, the weather took a turn for the worse, bringing heavy rain and, unfortunately, very little wind.
The fleet spent around two hours waiting on the water for conditions to improve. With the breeze refusing to arrive, the Race Committee eventually decided to bring the sailors back ashore and wait for better conditions.
Although no racing was possible, the day provided an opportunity to catch up with some of the sailors returning to the 470 fleet after a break.
Dahlberg and Karlsson make their return
One of the most interesting comebacks is that of Swedish sailors Anton Dahlberg and Lovisa Karlsson. The duo, who won Olympic bronze in the 470 Mixed Dinghy at Paris 2024, have returned to the class after taking a break following the Games.
The decision to return was partly spontaneous, although the idea had been on their minds for quite some time.
"It's been in our minds for quite a long time, but there have also been some last-minute calls. So, a bit of both," Karlsson explained.
For Dahlberg, the return is mainly about getting back to what he loves most: racing.
"I love racing. I love sailing. I think it's a great sport. It keeps my mind, my body and my soul united. So yes, of course I missed it."
The Swedish team made an impressive start to their comeback, finishing third at the Sailing Grand Slam event in Los Angeles. They arrived in LA without any particular expectations, instead relying on the strong foundation they had built together before Paris 2024. Now, after only a relatively short time back on the water together, the focus is on improving race by race.
"It's going to be a really exciting week. We love being here in Enoshima and out on the water. We'll just take it day by day, race by race," Dahlberg said.
Returning to Enoshima is also an emotional experience for him. Five years ago, Dahlberg won Olympic silver at the Tokyo Games on these waters.
"This specific boat park is quite emotional for me. Five years ago I became vice Olympic champion here. What I remember the most is the people. Being here today and seeing everyone around makes me proud. It's a great community. It's fantastic to see the comradeship and how people help each other while still trying to be the best on the water."
Experience meets youth for the USA
Another team making a comeback is the American duo of Lara Dallman-Weis and Justin Callahan.
For Dallman, returning to Enoshima has a special meaning. She is back at the Olympic venue for the first time since Tokyo and is once again racing in one of her favourite boats.
"It's a really fun challenge. I love this boat, it's one of my favourite venues and one of my favourite boats. It's really cool to come and race a World Championship and not have been back to this venue since the Tokyo Olympics. It's really special," she said.
For Callahan, meanwhile, the 470 represents a newer challenge. Working alongside the more experienced Dallman has meant a steep learning curve in the build-up to the World Championships.
"It's been a pretty steep learning curve for me. Lara and our coaches have been really influential in helping me get up to speed as quickly as possible before the Worlds," Callahan explained.
The pair believe that their different backgrounds can be an advantage. They bring very different experiences to the boat, but have quickly developed a strong collaboration and, importantly, are enjoying the process.
Both teams will now have to wait a little longer for their first World Championship races. On the opening day in Enoshima, the rain arrived, but the wind did not. The fleet will be hoping for a very different forecast tomorrow.
