Nacra 15 World Championship 2026 at Plymouth, UK - Day 1

by Plym Yacht Club 29 Jul 11:04 BST 26 July - 1 August 2026

The Nacra 15 World Championship opened to dazzling sunshine and no wind at all. After a 3 hour postponement ashore, RO David Rollinson was keen to try and get something in, and headed out to the race track. Inside Plymouth Sound, a light sea breeze had settled enough to get race 1 going.

It was great to see local sailors Will Boalch and Eliza Pritchard leading round the windward mark in race 1, which whilst they were unable to hold to the finish, earned a very credible fifth. The race was ultimately won by Marie-Fleur Van Den Doel and Sander Borghus, with Martina Zaia and Di Cosmo Lorenzo followed by Alessandro Vargiu and Noa Lisci.

Tim Buckley on the safety team noted, "the fleet's showed great patience whilst waiting for the Brittany ferries Pont Avon to head out of the Sound."

Félix Tron from FRA 270 said, "It was a long day with a lot of waiting before we finally got on water. The light and shifty breeze, together with the current, made the starts really important. I think the whole fleet learned a lot today, and it's great to see such strong competition on water."

Race 2 kicked off with a lighter breeze, and the wind dying significantly during the second lap meant the day ended on that race. Mattia Di Martino and Nina Cittar came first, followed by the French team of Anahita Fontanille and Jean-Albert Leo. Another third place for Alessandro Vargiu and Noa Lisci means that they are leading the World Championship on day 1.

More promising wind on day 2 means that the Race Management team are expecting to try and get five races in.
