National Redwing Dinghy Championship at Looe Sailing Club

by Dan Jackson 19 Jul 19:56 BST 4-5 July 2026

A fine looking fleet of National Redwing dinghies assembled in Looe for the class national championships on July 4th and 5th.

Fantastic weather greeted the fleet at the legendry home of the Redwing where the class was born in 1947.

On the Saturday two races were held in a light and shifty northerly breeze with some real snakes and ladder wind shifts coming off the land.

Sunday dawned with wall to wall sunshine and a rock solid south westerly that built throughout the day, enabling two more races and some fast planning on the reach back home at end of play.

Ronin & Ben Wood from Tenby had a breakage in race one putting them to the back of the field on the first beat of race one, but race two, three and four saw domination with 3 straight bullets and a well-deserved championship win.

The battle for second place was fierce with lots of place changing and luffing duels a plenty, as the locals gave the visiting Tenby fleet a taste of "Kernow bys vyken"!

Next up on the Redwing calendar is the Inland Championship at Llys-y-fran reservoir in beautiful Pembrokeshire on August 1st & 2nd.

If sailing a more traditional style of dinghy appeals to you please contact the class via their Facebook page.
