Danseur Moves Ahead as Fleet Expands
Day 2 of Brisbane Race Week presented by Porsche Centre Brisbane delivered a step up in both scale and intensity on Moreton Bay, as the fleet shifted into passage racing and the Off the Beach divisions joined the action.
With close to 50 boats now racing across multiple courses, the day delivered a new set of challenges for crews, testing consistency as the series began to take shape.
In the Monohull Performance division, Tool Time (Stephen O'Brien) continues to lead the standings after another solid day, with KERB (John Whitbread) keeping the pressure on in second.
The Monohull Cruising division saw a change at the top, with Danseur moving into the overall lead ahead of French Kiss and Blackadder, highlighting the importance of consistency across varying formats.
Out on their own, Dog House (Bruce Hume) continues to lead the Multihull division as the sole catamaran in the fleet.
Conditions on Moreton Bay again played a key role, with crews required to adapt quickly to the shift from the opening day's 'hot lap' format into longer passage-style racing.
Race Officer Paul Bolton said the second day of racing highlighted the versatility required across the week.
"With the change in format, it's about backing up performances and making the right calls across different styles of racing," said Bolton.
With two days complete, the leaderboard is beginning to take shape, but with multiple formats still to come, the regatta remains wide open.
On the Off the Beach course, the addition of the Finn and VX One classes brought further depth to the regatta.
In the VX One fleet, Mack One (Ben Franklin) leads on the back of consistent performances, with Double Black (John Somerville) and Lateshift (Peter Conde) remaining firmly in the mix.
The Finn fleet has delivered some of the closest racing of the regatta so far, with Annie (Larry Kleist), Jazel (Kane Sinclair) and Lonya (Tristan Perez) locked together on equal points after two races, with no clear separation at the top.
Off the water, the regatta continues to build momentum, with the social program playing a key role in bringing crews together after racing. The Legends on the Lawn last night was a massive success.
Event Director Anton Prange said the regatta continues to grow beyond expectations.
"This regatta just continues to exceed expectations. For me, it's as much about what happens off the water as it is on it. The sailing family is real, and we really see that here, a regatta developed by sailors, for sailors."
