North America's largest one-design foiling fleet got under way today on Pensacola Bay following the opening ceremony at the American Magic High Performance Centre.

Champagne conditions and three races delivered a sharp opening day, immediately rewarding precision and consistency across a tightly packed fleet.

Opening Ceremony: At the Home of American Magic

The Games kicked off at the American Magic High Performance Centre - SailGP's first long-term training base, built for year-round performance and technical development. For WASZP sailors, it provided a direct link to the sport's high-performance pathway, with recognition held in a facility dedicated to developing the next generation of talent.

Sailors, coaches, and supporters were given exclusive behind-the-scenes access to one of the sport's leading high-performance programmes. With the All-Stars winners recognised, the 2026 WASZP Games were officially declared open.

Lattanzi Sets the Pace in 7.5 Fleet

Pearl Lattanzi wasted no time asserting control. The All-Star Champion took Race 1 ahead of Casey Small and Annie Sitzmann, then completed a clean sweep of all three races to claim the overall lead after Day 1.

Martinius Melleby Hopstock sits second overall, with Lucas Doran in third, both already under pressure as the fleet begins to compress behind the leader.

Ball Leads American Charge in 8.2 Fleet

The American dominance wasn't limited to one fleet. Gavin Ball was relentless in the 8.2, posting two race wins and a second-place finish for a near-perfect four-point score and the overnight lead.

With small margins separating the front of the fleet, Thomas Sitzmann in second and Pablo Astiazaran in third remain firmly in contention heading into Day 2.

Faster, Tighter Racing on the Horizon

A stronger breeze and a SailGP-style course format are expected for Day 2, increasing the demands on boat handling and decision-making.

With the fleet tightening and speeds increasing, starts, positioning, and decision-making will become critical as passing opportunities narrow.
