ORC Double-Handed European Championship opens in Altea, Spain

The ORC Double-Handed European Championship 2026 officially begins today in Altea, marking the fourth edition of the continental title and forming part of the 40th anniversary edition of the 200 Millas A2, organized by Altea Sailing Club (Club Náutico Altea - CN Altea) in collaboration with the Offshore Racing Congress (ORC).
A total of 53 boats representing six nations have gathered for what is widely regarded as the most demanding winter offshore regatta in the Mediterranean. The championship runs from March 1 to March 7 and signals the opening of the 2026 ORC international championship season, following the conclusion of the 2025 season at the ORC Double-Handed World Championship in Monfalcone, Italy.
This historic 40th edition represents a milestone for the 200 Millas A2, as the event continues its evolution from a national offshore challenge into a key continental championship for double-handed competition. The regatta consistently attracts some of the most experienced offshore specialists from Spain and across Europe, drawn by the technical and physical demands of long-distance winter racing.
A comprehensive programme on and off the water
Beyond the sporting competition, the 2026 edition has been accompanied by an extensive public programme throughout February, featuring cultural and educational initiatives celebrating maritime heritage, including talks, screenings, and themed events.
The official sporting schedule commenced with registration and safety inspections conducted by the ORC Technical Committee, led by ORC Chief Measurer Zoran Grubisa and ORC Rating Officer for Spain, Rafael Bonilla. Over two days, each boat undergo detailed verification of safety equipment, onboard systems, and sails in accordance with ORC regulations. When the fleet is cleared for competition, attention turns to racing on Tuesday.
On Monday, March 2, at 20:00, the Skippers' Meeting will bring together competitors and officials. The Race and Technical Committees will outline all operational aspects of the championship, while meteorologist Samuel Beneyto will present the official weather forecast. The evening will conclude with a wine reception for participants.
Racing schedule
The first points of the championship will be decided on Tuesday, March 3, at 12:00, when the fleet starts the short offshore race. Designed as a coastal race of tactical precision, the race is expected to last approximately 8-10 hours for the slowest boats, with a same-day finish anticipated.
Wednesday, March 4, will serve as a rest and preparation day ahead of the main offshore challenge. At 14:00, a traditional paella will be offered to participants, staff, and collaborators - a long-standing social highlight of the regatta.
The defining moment of the championship arrives on Thursday, March 5, at 12:00, when the fleet sets course for Ibiza to begin the legendary 200 Millas A2 regatta serving as the long offshore race for the ORC DH Europeans. The route will take the competitors from Altea to Ibiza Island, on to Formentera Island, and back to Altea — a demanding Mediterranean circuit expected to last approximately 48-60 hours for the slowest boats.
Spectators wishing to follow the start from the water may board the 130-seat Mundo Marino catamaran at 10:30 at the fuel dock area of the club's boatyard. The regatta can be followed in real time via the official website, www.200millasa2.com. All participating boats are equipped with GPS tracking for satellite monitoring, and the competition can also be followed through the TracTrac mobile applications for Android and iOS.
The schedule may be adjusted depending on weather and wind conditions.
The championship will conclude on Saturday, March 7, at 20:00 with the official trophy ceremony, celebrating the new ORC Double-Handed European Champions and marking the close of this landmark 40th anniversary edition.
Titles, trophies and prizes
Both the ORC Double-Handed European Championship and the 200 Millas A2 are contested in three divisions according to the International ORC measurement certificate: Class A, Class B, and Class C.
The ORC Double-Handed European Champion 2026 title will be awarded to the top-ranked boat in each class. Medals will be presented to the top three teams in each division as winners of the ORC Double-Handed European Championship. In addition, regatta sponsor Neckmarine will award an official regatta watch to the medalists.
The Club Trophy will once again be contested during the 200 Millas A2. The clubs of Torrevieja, Valencia, Palma, and Jávea are currently in contention based on the number of registered entries.
Continuing a tradition dating back to the inaugural edition in 1987, Club Náutico de Altea will also award silver ingots to the top three overall finishers of the 200 Millas A2. First place will receive two one-kilogram silver ingots, second place two half-kilogram ingots, and third place two quarter-kilogram ingots.
