Auckland to Host International Disabled Sailing Challenge as part of a global movement to get sailing reinstated to the Paralympics. Following SailGP Spotlight

Sailability Auckland is proud to announce the Burnsco 2026 SKUD 18 International Match Race Challenge, taking place at Westhaven Marina from 20-22 February 2026.

Following immediately on the heels of the global SailGP circuit, this high-octane regatta will see elite international and New Zealand sailors with disabilities compete on the same waters as the world's fastest foiling catamarans. The event serves as more than just a competition; it is a critical platform in the global movement to reinstate sailing into the Paralympic Games for Brisbane 2032.

"Our goal is to create a premier event that showcases the incredible skill, resilience, and competitive spirit of adaptive sailors," says Tim Dempsey of Sailability Auckland. "With the world's media spotlight already on Auckland's Waitemata Harbour, we are seizing the opportunity to prove that sailing is a world-class, inclusive sport that belongs on the Paralympic stage."

The SKUD 18 (Skiff of Universal Design) is a former Paralympic Class. It is a high-performance two-person lead-assisted skiff specifically designed to accommodate sailors across a wide range of physical abilities.

The Match Race format provides an intense, tactical spectacle for viewers, with boats competing directly against one another in a series of fast-paced duels.

The 2026 Challenge is already generating strong momentum, with international competitors joining a formidable local fleet. Supported by naming sponsor Burnsco, the event will bring together athletes, support crew, and a committed volunteer team for three days of high-level competition.

Sailability Auckland, based at Westhaven Marina, has been a cornerstone of the local community for years, providing accessible sailing opportunities that build mobility, self-confidence, and pride through achievement.

Members of the public are encouraged to come down to Westhaven to witness the racing and support the call for Paralympic reinstatement.

Pivot on this
I despise the way ‘pivot' got used as many times as those wretched QR codes... Yes indeed. As much as I would hate to take people back to the COVID era, that's exactly what I've just done. Making that problematic trip back in time look good, is how much I despise the way ‘pivot' got used as many times as those wretched QR codes. Posted on 2 Nov 2025

Consistency and good tactics were the key to success Forecasts of 30-40 knot gusts, weren't good. Just the opposite to September when we had to abandon our first try for lack of wind but, by the end of the week it looked promising and, arriving at Rutland on Saturday morning, the wind was only 5-10 knots.
