Penguin Trophy at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club

by Amy Morris 9 Jan 13:57 GMT 3 January 2026

Ten intrepid pairs, wearing more than the usual amount of thermals and hand warmers, set off from a slippery pontoon at the Royal Lymington Yacht Club on Saturday 3rd January to take part in the 2026 annual Penguin Trophy, aiming to win the coveted silver statue.

We were given an excellent and relaxed briefing and allocated our Lymington River Scows by race officer Roy Froud and his team. Conditions were perfect: wind blowing straight down the river, sun, high tide and a nice short course. The race team worked hard to fit in five two-lap races in between the ferry schedule. Racing was fun, fast and wonderfully friendly! Competition was high and the field of competitors contained an Olympian, a twice Youth Nationals winner, numerous World, European and National champions as well as up and coming youths and previous Penguin Trophy winners.

After five races and two hours on the water the family teams conquered and the trophy was won on the line by Nick and Fanny Rogers, just five slim seconds in front of Amy and Finn Morris. A well-deserved 3rd place went to Nik and Hannah Froud with Rory and Alex Paton in 4th.

Huge thanks to the Royal Lymington race team for laying on an excellent event, both for the competitors and the spectators in the bar, and the warming coffee and mince pies.
