Royal Lymington Yacht Club Welcomes New Commodore and Sets a Clear Course for the Future

The Royal Lymington Yacht Club (RLymYC) is delighted to announce the appointment of Sally Potter Kalis as Commodore, confirmed at the Club's General Meeting on 7 February. Sally becomes only the second female Commodore in the Club's 100-year history, marking a significant and proud milestone.

The first was The Hon. Mrs Cecil Brownlow, a founder of the Lymington Yacht Club, who served as Commodore during the Second World War (1937-1946). During her tenure, the Club was granted Royal status in November 1938, making her the first female Commodore of a UK 'Royal' yacht club.

Sally has been a Member since 1975 and has played a major role in the Club's racing life, including the Royal Lymington Cup and MacNamara Bowl. She previously served as Rear Commodore Sailing (1991-1994), has been a keen and successful offshore racer, and today remains an active Folkboat sailor.

Incoming Commodore Sally Kalis said:
"The Royal Lymington Yacht Club has always been about the people, the camaraderie and participation in a wealth of activities for all ages. My focus is on keeping activity on the water at the heart of everything we do, while ensuring the Club remains welcoming, relevant and accessible — whether someone is taking their first steps afloat or has been sailing for decades."

Outgoing Commodore Michael Derrick, stepping down after three years in office, added:
"It has been a privilege to serve the Club during a period that has at times been challenging but, always rewarding. I am delighted to pass the baton to Sally, whose experience, commitment and understanding of the Club make her ideally placed to lead us forward."

Alongside Sally's appointment, the Club welcomes Mike Hobby as Vice-Commodore, with Shannon Rockey joining as Rear Commodore House and Peter Saxton as Rear Commodore Sailing. Jeremy Baker continues in his role as Rear Commodore Finance, providing continuity and financial oversight, supported by General Manager Kirsty Husband, who leads the Club's day-to-day operations.

Recent refurbishment works reflect the Club's commitment to relevance and Member experience. Following a planned two-week closure, extensive maintenance and redecoration were completed throughout the clubhouse. A new Members' Lounge overlooking the slipway now offers a relaxed space to watch activity on the water, while a dedicated Shipmates area for children aged 4-12 provides a welcoming environment for younger Members and families.

The Club's RYA training centre plays a central role in its vision, offering a clear pathway for those new to sailing and boating, alongside opportunities for Members of all ages to build skills and confidence on the water. With a busy on-the-water programme planned for the 2026 season, the Club is focused on participation, progression and enjoyment at every level.
