Notts County Sailing Club First of the Year Race 2026

by David Eberlin 2 Jan 18:35 GMT 1 January 2026

The Notts County Sailing Club's annual First of the Year Race on 1st January 2026 had a good turnout of 32 dinghies 4 windsurfers in aid of Children's Bereavement Centre (Newark), and around £400 was raised from entry fees and donations; thanks to all who contributed.

John Sears the race officer got the racing under way on time with a windsurfer fleet, fast and slow handicap. With sunshine to start with and the occasional gust allowing planing the course saw a good beat followed by reaches and second beat. There were visitors from Hykham, Burton and Lochaber, however the majority were from Notts County, the weather forecast and warnings along with cold conditions probably putting many off travelling.

Jamie Mawson from Notts County in an RS600 led the fast fleet on both races both on the water and on handicap, and was overall winner, taking home the Goeff Parker memorial trophy with Kevin Hope and Andy Stewart in a Fireball and Jake Willars in an RS600 not far behind. The Slow fleet saw Joe Scurrah from Notts County in an Aero 7 lead both races on the water to win the Phil Davis cup for the slow handicap.

Cillian Dyne and Hayden Moore won the Junior trophy with James Burton second.

In the windsurfers Sam Birch (Burton) on a raceboard won, but not without a close second race with Ian Pilkington who was on a smaller sail. Ben Bolet (Burton) was first junior windsurfer on a Techno.
