The Northern Tera sailors arrived on the 27th of September for a weekend of open training at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club. 13 eager sailors attended the weekend with stand in coach and Northern Class Rep John Reekie.

The first day's sailing offered 5-10mph winds and fair weather. The sailors spent the morning having fun doing several drills aimed at slow speed control to benefit their starting and basic mark rounding exercises. In the afternoon we ventured out into more boisterous conditions up the lake mainly driven by the young sailor's need for a bit of excitement. This was a challenging 15mph or higher gusts for the less experienced sailors, but all coped with the conditions and came ashore with smiles on their faces.

Sunday morning dawned with not a zephyr in sight, so the kids were treated to an hour of rules-based classroom exercises. After an hour of the coach droning on the kids were sent out to run around with a promise of capsize practice when we got launched at 1100 to placate their excitable nature.

When the breeze finally filled in, we persuaded the group to leave their Olympic swimming ambitions behind, pull their sails in and do some tacking practice. In the afternoon we used the same racecourse with the Fevas we are sharing winter training dates with. Tera kids benefitted from watching what both good and bad was before having a go at starting for themselves.

Big thanks to Bassenthwaite Sailing Club for hosting the visitors and members involved in the training. This is the first of our four-date series with the three remaining open training dates below where we will have our normal coach back for the remainder of the events.

  • 29-30th November 2025, Ullswater Sailing Club,
  • 7-8th February 2026, Windsford Flash Sailing Club
  • 11-12th April 2026, South Shields Sailing Club

The events are organised through a WhatsApp group with bookings taken through either club or class association website depending on venue. If you are a young Tera sailor on the north then get in touch with John Reekie at and I will happily chat through the offering from the class and get our younger sailors out boosting their skills.
