Chris Geering Trophy 2025 at Overy Staithe Sailing Club

by Jennie Clark 21 Sep 06:08 BST 20 September 2025

The final weekend of the 2025 season saw a small but dedicated fleet turnout for the Chris Geering Trophy, sailed on the evening tide on 20 September.

The weather forecast for the weekend had been causing some raised eyebrows - partly due to the forecast high winds but also due to the variety of when the wind would hit the coast. Sam and Richard Mason decided that the wind was going to land early and opted not to take their Albacore afloat as a result.

Whilst the forecasts may have been variable none of them mentioned the sudden squall which would come through mid race giving some spectacular and very wet (spray and the odd capsize) planing conditions, and resulting in one point where five of the fleet were all heading to Houseboat mark on the plane in masses of spray!

Sam Lamont was the only junior helm and came ashore smiling despite a lengthy capsize. In view of the forecast for the following morning it was decided to cancel the racing for the Trafalgar Trophy, which was due to be raced for at 7am on Sunday. The fleet will enjoy the lie in!

The 2025 season has been an incredibly successful one for the club, which some great racing and excellent turnouts. The year will be celebrated at the annual dinner and prize-giving on 3 January 2026.
