Overy Staithe Sailing Club Open Regatta

Overy Staithe held their annual open regatta over five days from 21 August. The event is always incredibly popular and this year saw the numbers taking part increase again, with a noticeable increase in junior participation.

The first day provided competition for sailors under 17, and for Ladies and saw Sam Worsley (Laser Radial) and Debs Crissell (Europe) taking the trophies for those races.

The Crossley Holland trophy was raced for on 22 August - this is a pursuit race and was won by Peter Turner (OK).

Saturday and Sunday saw the entry split into a range of fleets for the very many trophies which are presented at Regatta. With 46 boats entered the creek and lagoon were a mass of sails, and Race Officers Andy Turner and Peter Beck were kept busy with 7 starts to be run each day.

Trophies were awarded as follows:

  • Thursby Cup (Sharpies) - Ben and Paul Goakes
  • Lorrimer Cup (Wooden clinker boats) -Paul and Sian Beck (Family 14)
  • Earle Cup (OK dinghies) - Rodney Tidd
  • Storer Trophy (Lasers) - Ash Deakin
  • McLean Trophy (Laser Radials and 4.7's) - Lucy Lamont
  • Green Trophy (Mirrors) - Roy and C Shannon
  • Pat Noyes Trophy (under 17's) - Sam Worsley (Laser Radial)
  • Murray Noyes Trophy (under 14's) - Sam Lamont (Topper)
  • Douglas Carruthers Bowl (open handicap) - Mark Beck (Europe)
  • Stella Trophy (Wooden clinker boats) - Paul and Sian Beck (Family 14)
  • Captain Rix Trophy (OK dinghies) - Pete Turner
  • Stratton Cup (handicap boats under 14 feet) - Alex Scoles (Europe)
  • Regatta Tankard (boats = to and over 14 feet) - Alex Smith and Paul Beachell (Sharpie)

The William A Haines Memorial Cup was raced for on Monday, this is a pursuit race and includes a subsidiary trophy 'The Regatta Challenge Cup' for the clinker fleet. It is a fund raiser for the RNLI and donations were taken before racing. Race officers were Ash Deakin and Suz Deakin with Rod Thorpe and Ben Goakes in the safety boat.

Pete Turner won by a significant margin, followed home by Spike Turner and Mark Beck.

Paul Goakes and Catherine Goodley won the Regatta Challenge Cup for the first Clinker boat in the Haines Cup, racing the Twinkle Twelve 'Toes'.

Wilson Stephens Trophy at Overy Staithe
For under 17s, alongside the Ladies Race Following on from the club's Junior Disco on Wednesday 20 August, nineteen juniors took part in Overy Staithe SC's Wilson Stephens Trophy on Thursday 21 August. National 12s at North West Norfolk Week
Incredibly competitive sailing although unusually all the trophies were won by one team This year was the final edition of North West Norfolk Week in its current format - with the future to be decided over the next few weeks. Seafarers Pennant at Overy Staithe
Charity race includes personal handicaps as well as PY The Seafarers Pennant is one of four races held at Overy Staithe sailing Club that is decided using a combination of the standard Portsmouth Yardstick handicaps for the boat being sailed and the helms performance in the previous year.
