NOAA Fisheries is implementing an emergency rule that will increase the Gulf of America red grouper catch limits and extend the recreational fishing season.

NOAA Fisheries is implementing an emergency rule that will increase the Gulf of America red grouper catch limits and extend the recreational fishing season based on updated stock status information. Red grouper is an important species for Gulf of America fishing communities. This action boosts red grouper harvest opportunities for commercial and recreational fishermen, leading to improved economic benefits for the region. This action is supported by the updated stock assessment for Gulf red grouper, which found that catch limits could be increased substantially while still maintaining fishing at a sustainable level.

"This emergency rule means more time on the water catching more red grouper, and it is good news for Gulf of America fishermen," said Eugenio Piñeiro Soler, acting assistant secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA Fisheries assistant administrator. "NOAA Fisheries continues to promote opportunities for American men and women on the water, on the docks, and in the fisheries industries across our great nation."

The emergency rule will be in effect through the 2025 fishing year, which ends December 31, 2025. The Gulf Council is developing an amendment to the Fishery Management Plan for the Reef Fish Resources of the Gulf that considers increasing catch limits and modifying allocations between the commercial and recreational sectors. The council and NOAA Fisheries expect to implement this amendment in 2026.

NOAA Fisheries remains committed to our strong collaboration with local fishermen and fisheries management councils across the country to improve economic opportunities for American communities.
