Dangerous fishing conditions Thursday 16 and Friday 17 January

Why

A high over the southeastern Tasman Sea is extending a ridge towards eastern NSW maintaining a northeasterly airstream through much of the coast, while a trough off the far south coast is slow moving and weakening. Then, a cold front and its associated trough are forecast to enter the far south coast late Wednesday and cross the rest of the coastal waters through Thursday, with strong southerly winds and large powerful southerly swells in its wake. Strong south to southeasterly winds and hazardous surf conditions may remain during the later part of the week through the weekend as a low pressure system develops off the north coast.

Where

On Thursday on the Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra and Batemans coasts, seas of 3 metres and mixed southerly and north-easterly swells of 4 metres are expected. On Friday, on the Hunter, Sydney, Illawarra and Batemans coasts, seas of 3 metres and southerly swells of 3 to 5 metres are expected..

BOM is warning that on all those coasts, conditions are expected to be hazardous for coastal activities such as crossing bars by boat and rock fishing.

Swell period

Swell period will vary but will mostly be VERY short, as little as 4 seconds on some coasts on Thursday.
