United States Coast Guard checklist made simple

The United States Coast Guard (USCG) is often misunderstood. A boater in peril sees an orange vessel or aircraft and knows help is inbound. A boater up to no-good sees that same orange and squirms. But there's so much more to the USCG than saving lives and running down bad guys.

Did you know that the USCG is one of the five branches of the United States military. (Yes, now five, with the creation of Space Force.) Did you know there are over 40,000 active USCG personnel? And did you know USCG has a volunteer corps called the Auxiliary? Their job is providing resources and personnel to support operations, safety, security, and environmental protection, including the Office of Boating Safety.

In this educational video from Outdoors Education Network and sponsored by the Future Angler Foundation (FAF), USCG Auxiliary member Bob Woche runs through a vessel inspection with a pair of inquiring young minds.

Moreover, the video is part of a FREE comprehensive and accredited lesson plan for students, fishing clubs, youth groups, or anyone who wants to educate others about boating safety.

"At FAF, our mission is to help recruit, retain and reactivate recreational anglers and boaters," states the organization's president, Patrick Neu. "With our school curriculum video segments, accompanied by detailed lesson plans, we've made it easy for teachers to access fun and informative classroom video content that helps connect students with the sportfishing community and the great outdoors."
