Salcombe Yacht Club Winter Series - Race 3

by Lucy Burn 20 Nov 2022 09:46 GMT 19 November 2022

Five brave teams took to the water Saturday morning to take on the third race in the Fast Handicap Winter Series.

Course 3-1-X

With the estuary resembling a mirror, the first challenge was getting to the start line. Once there, a gentle breeze began to fill; enough to get proceedings under way. However, with a flood tide running and sailors a little too keen, Race Officer Rob Henderson felt that a general recall was in order.

Second time lucky they were away. Mike Hoyle and Sian Hodges in a N12 flew off the start with John and Frankie Burn also in a N12 in hot pursuit. The pair of 12s clearly suited to the conditions rounded crossways first followed by Will and Mandy Henderson in the Lark.

As they made their way to Blackstone the N12s managed to pull clear from the rest of the fleet and were now locked in a close battle with the lead changing on multiple occasions.

Mike and Sian managed to break clear as they crossed from Woodcote over to Biddle and once around Mark 1 were clear away. The tide now under them they sailed on to claim first place with Will and Mandy 2nd, followed by John and Frankie in 3rd.
