University of Limerick journalism student James Roulston Mooney has won the inaugural Irish Sailing Future Journalist Prize, a new bursary for journalism and media students with the aim of closing the knowledge gap between the media and sailing.

The inaugural prize was piloted with the University of Limerick with an award of €1,000 for the best judged piece of written work.

Roulston Mooney’s winning submission described his experience at the 75th Irish Sailing Champions’ Cup, the prestigious sailing event won by Olympian Ger Owens in early October.

The judges praised the calibre of the entries and said that Roulston Mooney’s article pointed to a bright future.

“I'm delighted to win the inaugural Irish Sailing Future Journalist Prize. Attending the 75th Champions' Cup was an absolute blast and I can't wait to cover sailing again in the future. I want to thank Irish Sailing, specifically their Head of Communication Treasa Cox, for the opportunity” commented Roulston Mooney.

Treasa Cox, Head of Communications at Irish Sailing said “This is the first year of the Future Journalist Prize. We’ve never done anything like this before and we were delighted with the standard of the entries. James’ entry to the competition impressed the judges and we look forward to watching what he does next in his career”.
