Falmouth Harbour Commissioners (FHC) are seeking a dynamic new board member with senior industry and maritime experience to help shape current strategy and bright future prosperity for Falmouth Harbour one of the premier Harbours on the south coast of the UK.

The rare opening comes as FHC bids farewell to Gary Tranter after nine years' service as Commissioner on the Board which manages the Trust Port, with statutory responsibility for the navigation and conservation of approximately 16 square miles of harbour area. Falmouth Harbour recently celebrated its 150th year of managing the 3rd deepest natural harbour in the world - strategically placed on the UK's Western approaches.

Gary Tranter has brought his experience of the commercial shipping world to influence strategy within the FHC remit which covers Falmouth Harbour, Falmouth Haven and Falmouth Pilot Services.

"It's been a fascinating nine years working at the very heart of one of the most strategically important and beautiful ports in the world" he says. "I have the honour of working with an incredibly professional team led by Harbour CEO Miles Carden - and I've been proud to be Chair of Falmouth Pilot Services and steer negotiations for the new pilotage contract."

FHC's small and dynamic Board and Committee has strategic oversight of a wide range of activities which are vital to the safe management and economic prosperity of the Falmouth Harbour. The Board membership rotates regularly, ensuring a continual benefit from new ideas and attitudes.

FHC Chair Carrie Gilmore says, "Managing a Trust Port is a demanding privilege which requires dedication and commitment - and which allows us to make a very real difference. As a Board we operate transparently and accountably and we're regularly scrutinised by our stakeholders and the media.

"The FHC Board requires a broad mix of skills but as well as extensive senior/board level experience our new Commissioner will have a strong background in the Maritime industries - ideally in Commercial Shipping, Naval or Shipping Agency, Port Management or Seagoing Management."

The new Board Member will formally start in January 2023, but would join as an Associate member from September to December 2022 to shadow Gary Tranter until his retirement in December. The appointment is for a three-year term which may be followed by a second term subject to Board approval.

The post requires approximately 2 days' work per month and is remunerated.

Applications close at 9am Monday August 8 2022, with interviews in the week commencing August 22 2022.
