Salcombe Yacht Club Midweek Series 2 - Race 4

by John Burn 1 Jul 2022 11:02 BST 29 June 2022

OOD, Simon Dobson, set the course of 1-3-2-3. Sixteen boats lined up for the start with the welcome addition of a couple of keen travelling Merlin Rocket teams, no doubt trying to get their eye in before next week's antics.

The fleet chose to split sides up the first beat with all but one of the single handers opting for the town side and all but one of the double handers opting for the Portlemouth shore.

It was hard to say which side paid off, in truth I’m not sure there was anything in it with the top 4 places overall being taken by an even split.

Local Merlin team Tim Fells and Frances Gifford were quickest of the Merlins up the first beat but the Merlin of Caroline Croft and Nicky Bass managed to get passed Tim and Fran then hold them off to take Rocket honours. However Caroline and Nicky found out how tricky it is to beat a Solo in a handicap race in Salcombe!

Olly Turner, a Solo sailor in form was first of not only the Solos but all the single handers. He managed to stay ahead of faster boats and keep close enough to the Rockets to notch up another 1st place.

Caroline and Nicky had to settle for 2nd whilst Tim and Fran took 3rd.
