Golden Globe Race Launch Weekend for Guy Waites at Scarborough Yacht Club

Scarborough Yacht Club and Guy Waites Sailing are to hold a public Launch Weekend and Fundraiser from Friday May 20th to Sunday, May 22nd to give Guy and yacht Sagarmatha a big send off for his entry for Golden Globe 2022.

Since the March update, Guy has been preparing and strengthening Sagarmatha to withstand the challenging weather conditions that all race participants will need to handle. Around 25 international entrants for Golden Globe are presently confirmed. The project is now ready to be launched.

Weather permitting, events will include...


  • The Guy Waites Golden Bay Race, sponsored by Castle Group


  • A Welcome Meeting and Talk by Guy on MV Southern Star, sponsored by SeaGrown
  • Sponsors’ and Donors Sail Signing and meet with Guy
  • A Sponsors reception onboard sponsor Regal Lady, with Guy


  • a PR flotilla for photographs of yacht Sagarmatha in racing trim

Scarborough Yacht Club will also be hosting number of member events weaved alongside the formal events. The full schedule is attached, see attached: Guy Waites Launch Weekend programme.

Guy has been delighted with the sponsorship and support from Scarborough Town and wider areas, and the many donations from the public, and corporate sponsors. He’s also been thrilled with the support of Scarborough Yacht Club and the Club has been delighted to enthusiastically assist.

Guy has wanted to show that a top level international event could be funded through a grass roots initiative, and this Launch Event proves he is is well on his way.
