Recreational fishers will once again converge on Shepparton for the sixth annual Murray Codference later this month.

Victorian Fisheries Authority (VFA) CEO Travis Dowling said the Codference, on Sunday 27 February, had become a popular gathering of freshwater fishing diehards keen to learn the latest in fisheries management and ways to catch iconic Murray cod and other prized native fish.

"The Codference is a free event funded by the State Government's $35 million Go Fishing Victoria plan to get more people fishing, more often," Mr Dowling said.

"It's a great event to pick up the latest tips and tricks on catching a cod and a wonderful opportunity for recreational fishers to get together, share a few fishing yarns and hear from experts about all things Murray cod.

"One of two keynote speakers this year is two-time Mulwala Classic winner, Thomas Pinter, who will share a few secrets on lake fishing for trophy cod. He'll be joined by fellow impoundment fisher Kate Norman, who has become known in recent times as the 'Eildon cod whisperer'.

"John Fyffe will speak on the art of clearwater cod fishing with bait, while industry legend and Freshwater Fishing magazine editor Bill Classon will talk through his preferred ways of targeting Murray cod and golden perch."

Mr Dowling said other speakers would cover topics including the VFA's new native fish hatchery at nearby Arcadia, a new project that is tracking cod in the Goulburn River above Lake Eildon, recovery efforts on Macquarie perch, and the successful Women in Recreational Fishing Network, which was started right here in Victoria.

"Participants will also get an update on how we are progressing towards our record-breaking fish stocking target of 10 million by April, including 2.6 million Murray cod, which is supported by your recreational fishing licence fees.

"Codference participants will receive a free show bag that includes a document summarising all the presentations, a cooler bag and a cod themed buff," Mr Dowling said.

The Codference will be a Covid safe event at the Riverlinks Eastbank Conference Centre, 70 Welsford Street, Shepparton, from 9am until 4pm. Tea, coffee and lunch will be provided.
