The first BMW City Challenge series was held this summer in the heart of the City of London at Victoria Docks. The fleet, chartered from Berkeley Marine, consisted of 8 Beneteau First Class 8’s all powered by brand new Hyde Sails. These 8 metre keel boats, capable of taking up to 5 crew, are fast, fun and exciting to sail. Berkeley Marine own and manage the boats and specialise in corporate events including team building, incentive and race days. The idea of the series was developed by BMW who approached the Royal Thames Yacht Club to organise the racing and committee boat.
Entries for the event were mainly city businesses including Ernst and Young, KPMG and NIR plus the Royal Thames Yacht Club. The winning team A and Eau, from the city law firm Allen and Overy, were overall winners collecting the Royal Thames City Trophy and an all expenses paid trip to Valencia, home of the Americas cup next year. The crew will be visiting the BMW/Oracle training base to watch the preparations as the BMW crew get ready to contest the Louis Vuitton cup.
Hyde Sails would like to congratulate A & Eau for their excellent performance and ultimate win.
Many thanks also go to the Royal Thames Yacht Club, Berkeley marine and BMW for setting up this exciting City Challenge, which captured the imagination throughout the summer. This will definitely become an annual event in the sailing diary.
