In response to numerous requests for more one-design racing at the Hamble Classics Regatta, the event organisers Jonty Sherwill and Vicki Weston are requesting reputable yacht designers to submit their vision for a classic style family sailing yacht that will fit within the event's Spirit of Tradition eligibility requirements.
Some parameters have been set to ensure classic values are maintained and so that designs can be judged fairly. Maximum overall length up to 40 feet (excluding any sprits), maximum draft 6 feet (plus centreboard if specified), and option of cruising interior or day racer fit out with one-design ballast equalisation. Hull and spars are to be of timber construction with sustainable epoxy resins allowed (more details available on request).
Submissions will be judged on aesthetics, projected sailing ability and 'niceness' with points awarded for traditional features, e.g. bronze fittings, copper sheathing, cotton sails, leaky decks, smelly lockers etc. Plans submitted must be hand drawn on vellum and using imperial dimensions only.
