Nail-biting Finish to Junior Regatta

The Hampton Sailing Club Junior Regatta was held on Saturday 29 July in near perfect sailing conditions with sunshine and a fresh wind straight down the river. With the event held in Enterprises and a strong wind, it was inevitable that there would plenty of capsizes to keep spectators happy and the shore team busy. The leaders would be the ones who could stay upright and sail fast.

As the 18 competitors headed for the fifth and final race, any one of three boats could win. Olivia Bell crewed by AJ was best placed with Suzannah Bell crewed by Alexander Doyle second and Morgan Perkins with Andrew Bedford close behind.

In the final race Olivia and AJ made a poor start but managed despite their light weight to power to leeward of the fleet but unfortunately a poor tack and having to duck a rogue port tack boat left them behind the bunch with no way back.

Morgan and Andrew worked their way up the fleet to win with Suzannah second and Charles Anderson third.

Overall results:

1st Suzannah Bell and Alexander Doyle
2nd Morgan Perkins and Andrew Bedford
3rd Olivia Bell and Alexander Oxley (AJ)
4th Charles Anderson, Charlotte and Lucy Cooper
5th Duncan Bell, Paul and Harry Jayasuriya
6th Gavin Ferguson, James Ferguson, Euan Ferguson and Molly Jayasuriya

The Octagon Developments Trophy for the best team went to the girls team of Suzannah and Olivia Bell who yet again beat the boy’s team of Morgan Perkins, Charles Anderson and Duncan Bell.

After the racing and BBQ the juniors motored over to the park for a game of basketball whilst the adults retired to the bar for well earned light refreshments.

Hampton Sailing Club is very friendly and open to members. It runs a full program of sailing and social events every year. Its great location makes it an ideal place to learn to sail or to join in the racing. Please visit the website at www.hamptonsailingclub.com
