The J105 & J92/J92s 2006 National Championships were hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club in Yarmouth at the beginning of July. Originally postponed due to strong winds and inclement weather, the reorganised event was held in glorious sunshine with a breeze ranging from 0–10 knots.
Four races were planned for Saturday but due to the fluctuating breeze, which eventually died, the final race had to be abandoned. So competitors, made a dash back to the yacht club, to see England knocked out of the World Cup on penalties! After the first day ‘Java Lite’ led the J92s fleet by just one point ahead of ‘Neilson Redeye’ powered by Hyde Sails and ‘Mojo’ was lying third in this competitive fleet, just one point further back. In the evening the J105 fleet enjoyed an informal dinner and the J92/J92s fleet a BBQ, both excellently organised by the host club. A disco concluded the evening with everyone enjoying themselves both on and off the dance floor!
Sunday dawned with more breeze in the Solent but the race area unfortunately bereft. All the crews were ready for the 1030 start although it soon became clear that anyone who had bought the Sunday newspapers would have plenty of time to read them. The race committee worked hard and eventually got both fleets away with just minutes to spare.
Prize giving took place in the afternoon when winners, runners up and many of the other crews received recognition for their achievements. Hyde Sails donated holdalls, T-shirts and caps as additional prizes for all the winning crews.
