RS Sailing 2021 - LEADERBOARD

Topper Open at Yeadon Sailing Club

by Mary Dawson 14 Jun 2006 17:37 BST 11 June 2006

Sunny and very hot, with a Southerly wind Force 2/3. There were not many celebrities, but there was an increased turnout from ourselves and nearby clubs. Young Oliver Wright, from Rotherham, led the field, but eventually had to give way to Adam Larvin, from Beaver S.C., and in due course the two of them finished 1st and 2nd. Peter Robinson, (YSC) who had to be “shoe-horned” into a Topper, fought valiantly for 3rd place, but as the wind dropped, Alice Milnes of Denholme, about 12 stones lighter, floated gracefully past.

In the second race, the wind fluctuated from Force 3 down to 1, and meandered a bit in direction. Adam Larvin demonstrated his experience from the very beginning, with Alice, still “flying” from the first race, in pursuit. In due course, Oliver profited from his weight advantage, albeit unable to catch Adam, but Alice held on gamely for 3d place

The third race started with much the same wind, albeit gusting enough to upturn some of the lighter contestants. Oliver politely allowed Adam to take the lead, before taking advantage of the light conditions half way through the race, and succeeded to the lead. Our own rising star, Adam Simms, who had fought steadfastly in the earlier races, fended off the rest of the fleet to finish a well deserved 3rd.

In the middle of the field, our resident Entertainer, Michael Pickard, fought tooth and nail against Peter Robinson and Mary “Tea Money” Dawson, and would have finished further up the field had he not indulged his love for “Dodgem Car” techniques on the line! Our newer Topper sailors, Sarah Woofenden, Gayle Kaye and the Lulham-Robinson boys gained valuable experience and will no doubt be a nuisance in future years.
