The second day of the 12th Puig Vela Clàssica regatta also started on time at precisely 1:00pm, in a race course area that today presented a different setting. The wind blowing was again from the south-west, but its thermal effect was lower, as it was its intensity. Quite irregular, its strength fluctuated between 8 and 12 knots depending on the race area, which today covered the coastline from Barceloneta to the mouth of the Besós.
Likewise, the regatta committee chose a coastal course under 14 miles for the Classic and Vintage fleets, and another 19-mile one for the Big Boats.
Guia, Argos, Moonbeam of Fife, Cippino and Marigan won the second race
The mighty Big Boats offered an interesting start with the Halloween and the Moonbeam of Fife, when the first one arrived port-tack to the start pin, while its rival did it crossing the line starboard. The situation was well-planned by both crews, but it gave an initial advantage to the Halloween, when the Moonbeam tacked to cover her without success, and she could fly away leeward thanks to her better drive.
From then on, the Halloween was able to keep ahead during the whole race, thanks partly to the fact that the smoother wind conditions improved her performance compared to the Moonbeam. However, despite finishing the race with a five-minute advantage, with the time compensation she stayed nine seconds short of the victory. With her two added victories, the Moonbeam of Fife is virtually the final winner.
In the Classic boats start, today's fleet was more cautious and didn't repeat the false start that yesterday got them in trouble. Among the longest, Classic 1, the battle between the Guia, Yanira and Outlaw was tough and close during the whole 14-mile course. Keeping a very short distance between them, they were able to measure their performance in the compensated time and make the most of the vessels and crew features. Uncertainty remained until the handicaps were applied, which confirmed their ranking, with all three boats squeezing in the finish line within a 28-minute slot, after a race of over 3 hours. The general classification, adding up yesterday's race and today's results, confirms the Guia's leadership with her two partial victories and 2 points. With 5 (2-3) points, the Outlaw comes in second position, while the Yanira (5-2), with 7 points, the Disparate (4-4) with 8, the Emeraude (3-7) with 10, and the Samarkand (6-5) with 11, will be fighting tomorrow to get the podium.
The Argos got her way again in Classics 2, by winning again by a wide margin over the Ojalá II and the Altamar. Likewise, Barbara Trilling's vessel confirms her first position in the general ranking, with 2 points over the Ojalá II, while the Madrifa, with 8 points, the Altamar, with 9, and the Margarita, with also 9 points, will be fighting tomorrow a very tough battle to obtain the third final position in this category.
The Vintage Bermudian fleet maintained its high regularity, where the five first sailboats kept yesterday's ranking. Adding both partials, the Cippino is leader with 2 points, followed by the Flord III, 4 points, the Argyll, 6 points, the Mercury, 8 points, and the Emilia Prima, with 10. On the other hand, the Vintage graff-rigged showed the greatest variability of results, with today's victory of the Marigan, which allows her to assume the leadership in the general classification with the same 4 points as the Marigold and the Veronique. This promises an intense duel tomorrow to settle the victory.
